There are many reasons for us to thank God for blessing our homeland Singapore. Let us count those blessings God has bestowed upon us in the midst of celebrating our country’s forty-fourth year of independence. Through the years, God has blessed us with dedicated, industrious leaders. They have wisely championed the cause and charted the courses of our country’s affluence and progress. They rule with sound moral standards and unfailing encouragement that Singapore should succeed as a small island state. Our national anthem and country’s pledge are constant reminders for us to be successful as a country - calling citizens to surge forward with renewed spirit and vigor, working as one united people for the mutual benefits of all. Can we be counted to do that? It is in our expectation to ask what our country can do for us but as a beneficiary of the ‘goods’ rendered to us by our country, we need to give thought to what more we can do for our country. We could be subscribing to the financial dues for the upkeep of our country or participating in communal services to lighten the loads of the less fortunate, and perhaps gotten ourselves involved in many other worthy contributions. However, there is something more that can be done for our beloved country. Something that is beyond our human efforts. We can, and we ought to commit our country’s leaders and ministers in prayer for they are the authority that God has appointed over us (Rom 13:1). Pray for wisdom and discernment for them as they lead the country so that we will continue to enjoy the favor of the Almighty Creator God for today and the generations to come. By the grace of God, Majulah Singapura! (Onward progress for Singapore!) Amen. Pastor Dr SC Elbert Lim
“I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” (1 Tim 2:1,2) |
