The Beginning PPCC’s humble beginnings can be traced back to 1935 when Pastor Phoa Hock Seng, a school teacher and principal, started a Sunday School class in his own home, a rented bungalow at 356 Pasir Panjang Road.
During the Japanese occupation, Pastor Phoa and his family moved a couple of times seeking refuge before moving back to Pasir Panjang. During this time, the church started English and Hokkien Worship Services, Hokkien Bible Study and prayer meetings. In the mid-1950s, the church began ministry work at Perak House, a home for boys, and started the Youth Fellowship.
In the late 1950s, Pastor Phoa bought the bungalow with donations from friends and relatives, and named the church as Pasir Panjang Christ Church ( PPCC) --for he firmly believed that the church belonged to Christ and not to him.
Current Church Buildings In 1973, PPCC acquired a property at 302 Pasir Panjang Road to erect a new church building. This is the current address of Pasir Panjang Christ Church. Pastor Phoa laid the Foundation Stone on 20 April that year. The church building project was officially completed in 1974, marked by a dedication service on Christmas Eve.
Over the years, the church grew and more ministries and fellowship groups were started. The need for more space was keenly felt as more people were added to the church. A decision was made in 1978 to plan and raise funds for the Phase II Church Building.
This phase began in 1990 and it included the construction of the Multi-purpose Hall Block and renovation work to the existing Building (Sanctuary). The new church building was completed in December 1991 and dedicated to God on Christmas day.
PPCC also sold the original property bought by the late Pastor Phoa and used the funds to finance the purchase of 302A Pasir Panjang Road. This annex was renovated in 1997 and it now houses the Fellowship Centre. Faithful Servants On 30 September 1978 , Pastor Phoa Hock Seng was called home to be with the Lord after 43 years of faithful service. In the years following, PPCC invited guest speakers, as well as its own deacons to preach the word of God.
This was until Jan 1981, when Pastor James Phoa , the eldest son of the late Pastor Phoa Hock Seng, assumed pastoral leadership after fulfilling his lecturing responsibilities at BJU ( Bob Jones University, South Carolina).
In 1984, Ptr Dennis van Etten arrived as Youth Minister in response to PPCC’s request to BJU for a youth worker. In the same year, Pastor KT Yeow graduated from BJU in ministerial training and took over the pastoral duties from Ptr James Phoa.
Subsequently, more pastors were ordained and served in various ministries: June 1995 - Pastor Elbert Lim and Pastor Ho Long Soon Jan 2000 - Pastor Peter Goh June 2002 - Pastor Charles Chow
Separation Stand During the period of time when PPCC invited guest speakers, the seeds of Charismatism were sown in the church through preachers who were ecumenical and neo-evangelical. When Pastor James Phoa assumed pastoral leadership, he taught the doctrine on Biblical Separation.
On 16 August 1981, PPCC took a stand on biblical separation from the charismatic movement, the neo-evangelical and the ecumenical movement. Spreading the Gospel In 2000, Pastor Peter officially planted a new church - Grace Bible Church in Punggol, and conducted the first worship service on 5 March. This was a historic event as Grace Bible Church was the first church that one of PPCC's members has planted in its 63 years of existence.
PPCC also began an extension ministry in 2001 at Ju Eng Nursing Home, off Jalan Kayu. This opened up a window of opportunities for evangelism among the senior citizens there.
Following the late Pastor Phoa Hock Seng’s example, when he went on solo missionary voyages, PPCC has since sent its mission teams to the harvest fields of Asia.
In 2002, Pastor Charles was ordained into the ministry and he became PPCC’s first missionary to the Philippines. Pastor Yeow also answered the call for mission work in 2004. As he moved on to the mission field, Pastor Elbert Lim was called; and upon completion of his doctoral study in Bob Jones University, was appointed by the Church to take care of the pastoral duty as the under-shepherd and senior pastor of the Church.
